Origins of Eyebrow Threading

Eyebrow threading is an early method of epilation, or removal of the entire hair, including the follicle below the skin surface. In ancient Persia, threading signaled the commencement of womanhood. Eyebrow threading is still the most prevalent method for hair removal in the Middle East and India to this day.

What Is Threading?

Cotton-sewing thread is cut to size and one end is knotted. The loop that is created can be small or large; whatever is comfortable for the threader. The fingers of each hand, minus the index finger, are placed inside the loop. The loop is twisted several times over into a bow tie shape. The twisted area of the thread in the center is placed onto the eyebrow hair that is unwanted. Working in the opposite direction of hair growth the twisted thread grips the hairs in a line as the threader's fingers open and close. Continually placing and pulling in a line opposite hair growth precisely shapes and removes the hairs. Eyebrow threading is quick as it can remove entire rows of hair in a straight line all at once. Face threading is also done the same way.

Is Eyebrow Threading for Everyone?

While no method of hair removal suits every person, some doctors and salons recommend eyebrow threading because it is gentler to the skin than other hair removal methods such as waxing. After years of practice, the threader should be able to precisely shape and contour eyebrows with a minimum of pain and no injury to sensitive skin. People taking Accutane for acne or other problems are often proponents of the process.
